Everyone learns the same positions in the same order. What changes is the pace, the partner, and how much of the round is live.

Weeks 1–16 · No experience

Foundations

Sixteen weeks of the positions everything else is built on: frames, posture, escapes, and how to breathe while someone is on top of you. You drill each position slowly with a partner who matches your pace.

Gi + No-Gi

Technique first, then positional rounds and open rolling. Gi builds grip and patience. No-Gi builds speed and connection. The syllabus runs in parallel, so you can train either or both.

Kids

Two age groups, never mixed: 5–8 and 9–13. Students work on balance, escapes, and how to say stop and be heard. We are finishing the coaching roster before registration opens. We haven't announced a start date, and we won't take payments until we do.

Getting started

Your first class
starts with the basics.

Live sparring comes later. Your first classes follow this sequence.

  1. Before your first class

    Orientation

A coach meets you at the door and walks you through the mat rules: where to line up, how to tap, when to stop. You watch one round before you step on.

    No rolling.

  2. Your first classes

    Foundations

Two positions per class, drilled with a partner who is told your start date. You begin with movement, frames, and escapes. Offence comes later, after you know how to stay safe under pressure.

    Drilling only.

  3. When you say so

    Controlled rounds

Each positional round has a fixed start and one job, such as escaping a pin or keeping a grip. A coach matches you with a partner, and you decide which week to begin.

    Your call.

Since 2005

From Dhahran
to Doha to Phoenix.

United BJJ was founded in 2009 in Doha, Qatar by Ismail “Rahsaan” Bass and Jamil Taylor, both 4th degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belts. The Arizona academy is the newest United BJJ location.

RJM BJJ opened in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, in 2005. The academy later expanded to Doha, Qatar.

In 2009, both founders earned their black belts in Doha under Tyrone Gooden, a Rigan Machado black belt. They founded United BJJ there that year, placing the academy in the Machado lineage.

United BJJ still teaches the same values: technical skill, humility, respect, and steady learning. New and experienced students train together, and partners are expected to help each other improve on and off the mat.

How we teach

Demonstrate.
Troubleshoot.
Apply.

Every class follows the same three steps, so you practice a technique before testing it against a partner who knows what is coming.

Beat one

Demonstrate

The coach shows the full technique at speed, then breaks it into three details. Each movement keeps the same name from class to class.

Beat two

Troubleshoot

Coaches move from pair to pair and correct your grip while you drill.

Beat three

Apply

Positional rounds start from the spot you just drilled. Coaches add resistance in small increments over the week.

  • Mats cleaned twice daily: before the first class and after the last, with a logged checklist by the door.
  • Nail and hygiene check at the edge of the mat. We don't allow anyone with a skin condition onto the mat.
